Hello Soumaya DanceMachine. You’re playing at our KOMOMENO party this Friday in Subway club Cologne. We are so much looking forward to it! To give our guests a little insight we would like to introduce you with a short interview.

When and why did you start DJing?

 I confess that I’m a little shy to have an interview in English. I have another big interview next Monday for the NY times in English, and I’m so afraid! But maybe KOMOMENO is the best exercise.   Well, 4 years ago, I worked in a video shop for classical movies and independent cinema called “Excellence”. They had a party in their bar and I asked the team (just girls as well) to make a DJ Set (Selecta DJs) only with soundtracks like Carpenter.   I started touching vinyl like that! That made me play in few bars and I deviated with techno music, got more interested in it and finally ended up in house, deep music and what I am playing now.

 Did or do you have any role models in the music scene, DJ-wise, artistically, or anything else?

 Margaret Dygas. I saw her playing in Panorama Bar 4 years ago. She is a fashion designer and a photographer too.
I like women performing multiple tasks!

And what are your other skills?

H mh.. graphic designer, producer for shooting editorial (magazines), event organizer, and a dance machine.  And I produce music too!!!

 Do you think that you are treated in another way because you are a female DJ?  

 In the beginning it’s a little bit harder, I must admit! We have to prove that we earned the place behind the decks! But I always rejected being a “DJane” and that gave me an advantage to be accepted and respected. I’m here to be a conductor (a “chef d’oerchestre”) doesn’t matter I’m a girl or guy, it is the music that takes precedence in this scene.

Did you earn strange or any funny reactions?

 I love being behind the decks and I am lucky to be a rather “pretty” girl who makes good music! If it wasn’t like this, it would have been harder for me!  Mhh … like all female DJs, I think! 
Not really funny but maybe it is right, I’m lucky to be cute! THANKS GOD!  Thanks mom and dad! Just kidding…

Okay, so you really enjoy being “well treated”, that’s good!  What about Brussels?  Do you like the environment, does it give you inspiration?

 I LOVE BRUSSELS!  There is a lot of potential here on one side and so many things waiting to be developed on the other. So many creative “player” to make this city a gold mine, all kind of arts and artistic actors.

What about the electronic music scene?
Which other locations did you play? Which places did you also like?

 It’s in expansion – like Cologne I think.
Fuse Club, Libertine, Catclub, Wood, Pastic Festival, Blast Your Ghetto & Noord in Antwerp just to name a few good ones. Between organizers and party people, we try to listen to each other and create a good energy.

Did you play in other countries? 

Yes I did. In Switzerland, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin a few times.  And soon. In Italia. London and, of course, in Cologne this Friday.  I’m really glad KOMOMENO invited me.

Cologne is a city I frequently visited for 3 years, and therefore had been tucked into my heart with ease!
I am still very familiar with the neighbourhood and got “Brüsseler Platz” and “Belgisches Viertel” very well in memory. 
The life is, for me, as nice as in Brussels. The same energy and same young lifestyle. Music wise, it has dethroned Berlin, in my eyes!

Dethroned is a strong word!

Yes I know! And I love it!  My English has hijacked the word and I didn’t know another translation. 

How long are you staying in Cologne? 

I don’t know. I only booked one way! Maybe until Sunday.  Depends if the weather and parties are good.

Almas Premiere in Köln bei Komomeno

Alma Gold ist unser Headliner bei der ersten KOMOMENO Party am 8. April im Subway. Wir haben sie bei der Gelegenheit ein bisschen zu ihrem bisherigen DJ-Dasein befragt. Außerdem hat sie für uns extra einen neuen Mix aufgenommen. Check!

Komomeno: Also – deinen Mix findet Komomeno ja erstmal richtig top! Wie Du ja weißt möchten wir mit Komomeno auch etwas die Mädels an den Reglern pushen. Was hältst Du denn davon?

aLma GoLd: Grundsätzlich mag ich so reine “Mädels-Floors” nicht so gerne, da man dann ja doch zwischen männlichen und weiblichen DJ unterscheidet. Aber wenn man eine Party-Reihe komplett auf weibliche DJs aufbaut, find ich das nicht schlecht. Es ist und bleibt halt immer noch etwas Besonderes, Frauen hinter den Reglern, da DJanes immer eine Minderheit ausmachen werden. Es ist halt ein Männer-Metier – wenn Frau allerdings technisch gut ist, gut mixen kann, tolle Musik spielt, und dazu auch noch schön anzusehen ist, ist das schon was Feines.

Komomeno: Hast Du als Frau, mit den von Dir beschriebenen Merkmalen, schon spezielle Geschichten erlebt, wobei das „Frau sein“ dir behilflich war, die Sache erschwert hat oder Dich einfach nur eine lustige Geschichte hat erleben lassen?

aLma GoLd: Das “Frau sein” birgt Vor- und Nachteile; Vorteil ist zum Beispiel, das man am Anfang, wenn man noch keinen Namen hat, schneller die Möglichkeit bekommt gebucht zu werden, da es für Veranstalter immer ganz nett ist, mit einer Frau zu werben. Das kann wiederum ein Nachteil sein, weil man dann vielleicht nur wegen des Attributs “Frau” gebucht wird und nicht wegen seinem “Können”. Man muss als Frau auf jeden Fall technisch Top sein, denn sonst denken die männlichen DJS gerne, die legt ja nur auf, weil sie ne Frau ist. Männer sind einfach mehr die “Platzhirschen” und denken nicht so viel. Als Frau muss man sich da manchmal ein bisschen durchsetzen. Wenn man dann aber seine Arbeit gut macht, ist es wunderbar dazu auch noch ne Frau zu sein. Ich glaube, dass für Männer weibliche DJs schon etwas Besonderes haben.

Komomeno: Wie und wo bist Du zum Auflegen gekommen und wodurch hast Du es so weit gebracht?

aLma GoLd: Ich geh schon seit 15 Jahren zu elektronischer Musik aus, also seit 1996. Diese Musik und das Ganze was dazu gehört, hat mich von Anfang an in seinen Bann gezogen. Dann habe ich viele Jahre an der Bar gearbeitet, habe viele Leute kennen gelernt. Die Liebe zu dieser Musik ist immer das Wichtigste gewesen. Ich habe mir an der Bar oft gedacht, warum machst du das nicht einfach selbst und spielst einfach mal einen Nacht lang die Musik, die dir am Besten gefällt. Nach nur einem ½ Jahr üben hab ich dann schon ein Booking bekommen. Das ist von da an immer gut angekommen. Von Jahr zu Jahr wurden die Bookings mehr, was natürlich auch an meinen Kontakten und Freunden lag, die ich in all den Jahren aufgebaut habe. Ich glaube, dass das Gesamt-Paket, also: meine Soundauswahl, meine Art wie ich bin und auch mein Wiedererkennungswert mich auf meinem Weg voran gebracht haben.

Komomeno: Deine Home Base München ist nicht hundert prozentig auf dem elektronischen Highway. Da Du auch ziemlich viel unterwegs bist – wie erlebst Du die Szene dort unten?

aLma GoLd: Wie BITTE? München ist neben Berlin momentan die beste Stadt in Sachen Clubs neben Berlin.
Wir haben vielleicht nicht so viele Labels und es leben auch nicht so viele BIG DJs hier. Aber naja – das war vor ein paar Jahren mal anders.
Also, was die Clubs angeht bin ich mit München sehr zufrieden und was die Szene angeht noch mehr. Die Leute wissen richtig Party zu feiern, wissen aber auch wann Ende ist, sind alle sehr herzlich und mehr eine Gemeinschaft. Sie freuen sich über alle Besucher und Leute die nicht aus München sind, nehmen jeden herzlich auf und musikalisch wissen sie, was sie wollen und der Geschmack der Szene ist richtig gut. Ich liebe es hier und schätze es natürlich immer mehr, seit dem ich an den WEs oft woanders bin.

Komomeno: Welche Location hat Dir bei Deinen Gigs denn bis jetzt am besten gefallen? Wo wird am besten gefeiert?

aLma GoLd: Das ist schwierig zu sagen – da gibt es nicht nur eine. Also: ich liebe es in Wien zu spielen, Pratersauna, Sonntag morgens im Sass. Dann mag ich es sehr gerne in Dortmund, Royal Bambi, Zürich ist auch immer ein mega Spass, Hive z.B., ja und ganz vorne ist natürlich Rave on Snow, das beste Event des Jahres und auf dem Thaibreak – es ist einfach unglaublich im Paradies auch noch Aufzulegen

Und natürlich mein Resident Club das CHACA CHACA in München

Morgen ziehen wir in unsere neue Location, bin gespannt wie es den Leuten gefallen wird … aber ich glaube es wird super werden.

Komomeno: Dafür auf jeden Fall viel Spass!!

Hast Du neue Produktionen in der Pipeline?

aLma GoLd: Im Frühjahr kommt eine Nummer auf Beatwax (ein kleines Label aus Nürnberg) raus und dann noch eine zweite Nummer auf Lany Records (ist ein belgisches Label).
Ich komm grade wieder frisch aus dem Studio und habe drei neue Nummern gemacht und die werde ich jetzt mal an den Mann bringen. Bin gespannt, was dabei raus kommt; bin nämlich sehr zufrieden mit den drei neuen Tracks

Komomeno: Hey – da sind wir in Köln sehr gespannt auf die frischen Tunes! Kennst Du dich hier Köln in der Elektro-Szene aus? Hast Du schon einmal hier gespielt?

aLma GoLd: Nein, das ist quasi meine Köln-Premiere. Freue mich deshalb auch schon sehr darauf. Ich war zwar schon einmal zum Party feiern in Köln – hat mir gut gefallen – ist aber auch schon über fünf Jahre her. Deshalb bin ich mehr als gespannt
Und die frischen Tunes werde ich auf jeden Fall auflegen!

KOMOMENO #01

BAMM BAMM BAMM, may we proudly introduce you to:

On the 8th of April we will celebrate a double premiere.

On one hand it will be the release of the new fashion collection AXP #01 being the outcome of the first collaboration between fashion designer ANJA BASE and artist/painter PAULINA QUINTANAJORNET.

This celebration will be embedded in the premiere of our new party series called KOMOMENO!

The intentions for this and the upcoming parties are to push female DJs, enjoy their excellence at the decks and of course party hard and wild. We would like to focus on the girls without being feminist but setting the stage for the ladies to demonstrate their skills.

Moreover she owns a residency at famous Munich based CHACA CHACA Club allowing her to check out the latest tunes on a regular base. With her beautiful sense of style Alma creates sets consisting of Deep, Minimal and Tech House, avoiding monotonous Klick Klack Tunes and having the ability to enchant with beautiful melodies. DANCEMACHINE is a well known name in Belgium’s Club-Culture. She is the embodiment of what we are longing for at KOMOMENO: Dance-ecstasy! Her event HIGH NEEDS LOW, a monthly party at Brussels CONGRES STATION is a well-frequented meeting of artist, musicians and all kind of hipsters living in Belgium’s capital. Her artistic brother Byram recently told us that he’s designing a transparent DJ-desk, as everybody should be able to watch the dance moves of his lively little sister while DJing. We will!

Last but not least ANJA BASE will rock the dance floor. Being one of the promoters and founders of KOMOMENO she is a glittering star of the Cologne fashion and DJ scene. DJing and known for ages in and around Cologne, Anja made herself a big fanbase on her frequent gigs in Berlin and Lisboa as well. She fell heavily in love with Vinyl and therefore you can expect very well chosen Techno and House tunes which are all times loved by the crowd. Being through a lot of ups and downs as a female DJ, she is really committed to the idea of pushing the fair sex into the party scene and used to party beyond control.
